It is always nice if new footage of a Tomica Skyline RS Turbo pops up. However this time it is not the Super Silhouette Formula car but the Group C car!
It is driven in the Fuji 500km race in the 1983 Japan Endurance Championship: (video on the next page)
The car is driven by Masahiro Hasemi (also drove the Group 5 Skyline Super Silhouette) and Kenji Tohira.

This is amazing! I’ve always wanted to know what the difference between these two very similar looking cars was. I always thought this ‘group c’ car was just a later super silhouette. Thanks for the lesson! Isn’t Masahiro Hasemi the owner of Hasemi Motorsport who, I believe, had a lot to do with the prep of the car too (the super silouette at least!)?
Thanks! He is indeed the owner of Hasemi Motor Sport who did the Super Silhouette races.
As far as I know the cars are almost identical, but the Group C car is wider and lower than the Group 5 Super Silhouette. The reason lies within the ruling of the Group 5: the bodywork car has to have the same dimensions as the original. The exception to that (or rather they forgot to specify) is that the wheels (and its fenders) are not limited in width.
The Group C car was more aerodynamic as the Group C regulations were limiting in fuel, and since it was competing in endurance races the car had to be as low as possible.
Ah, I see, I see! I thought that the reason they looked different-but-the-same was due to an R30/R31 thing where both models looks similar, so from the side they were true to their respective ‘silhouettes’ (I think the ‘from the side’ stipulation in the group 5 regs is the reason for the wheel/wing width ‘oversight’) But I guess that means the Group C car is an R30 also? I do like the wide/low thing the Group C car has going on but my old favorite (Group 5) still comes up winning, I think!
PS Does anyone know a Hasemi Motorsport distributor…what I wouldn’t give for a Hasemi gearknob!
